Interesting excursions

Castle “Neuschwanstein”: this castle built by King Ludwig II, which is famous far beyond the German borders, is situated close to the town of Füssen, roughly one hour by car (about 59 kilometres). Once having stood in front of this mighty monument and having walked through it, you will understand why this important German tourist sight is referred to as the “fairy tale castle”.

Castle “Linderhof”: this is the smallest among the three castles which King Ludwig had built and it is the only one which has been completed. The castle “Linderhof” is moreover considered as the favourite residence of the king, where he stayed by far most frequently. It is situated approximately half-way between Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the castle “Neuschwanstein”. Thus the two sights can be visited without problem in one day trip.

Town of Oberammergau: in the year 1633, when the plague raged, the inhabitants of Oberammergau vowed solemnly to perform regularly “Passion Plays”. Today, the most famous “Passion Plays” of the world take place every ten years involving large parts of the local population. In between, the town with its theatre is in any case a worthwhile destination for a visit, which is always a leap back in time. The next performance of the “Passion Plays” will take place in summer 2010. Oberammergau can be reached within only 20 minutes (about 20 kilometres).

Village of Mittenwald: the village of Mittenwald is considered today as the most important German centre of the manufacturing of string instruments. Concerning this craft Mittenwald can boast a more than 300 year tradition. Guests who would like to see authentic instruments of local production can visit the violin manufacturing museum at Mittenwald in the “Ballenhausgasse”, which was reopened on April 16th, 2006 after renovation and refurbishment work. Mittenwald can be reached within about 20 minutes.

Gorge “Geisterklamm”: in contrast to the “Partnachklamm” at Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the trail along the “Geisterklamm” (ghosts’ gorge) is prevalently built with steel and concrete along the upper edge of the gorge (it is not recommendable for people suffering from fear of heights). We suggest to park your car in Mittenwald and walk to the gorge on the marvellous footpath. It takes about 20 minutes to travel to Mittenwald.
